Yes, Byron Bay may be one of the more expensive destinations to travel to. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy cheap eats that are as delicious as they are budget-friendly. In fact, look past the usual lineup of restaurants and eateries that are always recommended, and you’re set to discover that some of the best food stops going around town are also some of the most inexpensive.
Whether you’re on the hunt for lunch or dinner, take advantage of the research (and taste-testing) that we’ve done for you, and bookmark our list of cheap eats in Byron Bay.
10 Places To Eat On The Cheap in Byron Bay
1. Chihuahua | MEXICAN
This taqueria on Jonson St brings the flavours of Mexican street food to Byron town, with a menu focused on tacos. We also love their affordable side dishes, including corn cobs, totopos, Mexico city fries and jalapeno poppers.
2. Orgasmic Food | MIDDLE EASTERN
For a taste of the Middle East, you have to eat at Orgasmic Food. Their speciality (according to us) is falafel pockets, but you can also grab pockets and plates of chicken, beef and lamb. They have vegan and gluten free available.
3. Foxy Luus | ASIAN
*Temporarily closed* Fresh, inexpensive Asian street food is what you’ll find at Foxy Luus, served in a very cool, hip setting. Their steamed bao buns are loaded, as are the delicious dumplings, bone broth soups and rise paper rolls.
4. Red Ginger | ASIAN
Red Ginger is an eclectic mix of a restaurant, homewares store, Asian grocer and takeaway joint. In terms of cheap eats, you can’t go wrong here, with their deliciously fresh dumplings just $2 and steamed buns only $2.70. They also have packets of dim sums you can takeaway and cook back at our guest kitchen at Wake Up!
5. The Cardamom Pod | INDIAN
For delicious, healthy, hearty, colourful food with the most beautiful atmosphere, you have to go to The Cardamom Pod. This original Hare Krishna eatery is fully vegetarian, but don’t let that deter you meat-eaters! You’ll find wholesome and inexpensive curries, salads, samosas, pakoras, lentil pies and much more.
6. Japonaise Kitchen | JAPANESE
We love Japonaise Kitchen for their fresh sushi, ramen, friendly service and great value dishes. It’s a small hole in the wall, but don’t fret if it’s full when you arrive – the service is super speedy, and it is worth the wait for a seat! Reasonable prices for hearty, wonderful food!
9. Byron Bay Hotbread Kitchen | BAKERY
For a super Aussie and very affordable lunch, head to a local bakery for a pie or a sausage roll! Byron Bay Hotbread Kitchen is on the main street of town, where you can snag your baked lunch for a little more than $5.
8. Beloporto | BURGERS
Beloporto is an unassuming burger bar that serves “Bloody Beautiful Burgers” – their words, but our feelings. Their menu is extremely affordable (almost all burgers are between $11-$13 dollars). Grab a takeaway and enjoy at the beach!
9. Suffolk Park Hotel | PUB GRUB
A very short drive from Byron, the Suffolk Park Hotel has a great range of daily pub specials (as well as an all day Happy Hour on Monday). On Tuesdays, grab the $14 Southern Fried Chicken and $5 tinnies; Wednesdays you can enjoy $15 rump stake; and Thursdays are $12 chicken schnitzel night.
10. Pizza Paradiso | PIZZA
Another restaurant that you’ll find in Suffolk Park is Pizza Paradiso. Although it is great at anytime of week, on Tuesday nights they offer Cheap Tuesdays with discounted pizzas – winning!
