Sydney’s cafe scene is fully on board the spotlight that matcha is having right now. And so are we! From Surry Hills to Bondi, Newtown to Manly, there’s no shortage of cafes doing creative things with our favourite green tea powder. And fortunately for you (and us), exploring this city’s food scene and reporting it back to you, is essentially part of the job. So when it comes to where to find a great matcha in Sydney, we are at your service!

Whether it’s coconut matcha clouds worth the hype, iced cherry matchas, or matcha yuzu tonics, we’ve tracked them down. Some spots are cosy neighbourhood cafes. Others have queues around the block for good reason. All of them are worth your time.

Here are nine of our favourite Sydney cafes to grab a matcha.

1. Roller’s Bakehouse, Manly

You come to Roller’s for their non-negotiable pastries that are next-level good. But equally on point, is their Iced Matcha Latte and Coconut Matcha Cloud. Order one of each, and you’ll find yourself walking through Manly in a dream-like state of content.

2. Outta Coffee, Haymarket

Outta Coffee place is seriously cool. And best yet – it’s right here near us at Wake Up! Sydney Central. Tiny in size the cafe may be, but large in its loyal following of coffee-lovers and matcha consumers. Grab a croissant while you’re there!

3. Harry’s Bondi, Bondi Beach

If you love a matcha and frequent Bondi, then you need to know about Harry’s Bondi. Their speciality iced matchas are served in a can, shaken with both coconut and almond milk. Sam (our Manager at Wake Up! Bondi Beach), loves their Mango Iced Matcha.

4. Sunday’s Bondi, Bondi Beach

Sunday’s is the kind of small bakery that is crushing it at life. Their mini cinnamon scrolls made a cameo appearance across all NSW Yo-Chi stores, Meta ordered 500 of their scrolls, and the long queues forming from their sweet little store, is epic to see. And let’s just say: their matcha is just as divine. Sweet tooths will be tempted by the Kinder Bueno Iced Matcha and Strawberry Matcha, while the Matcha Coconut Cloud is a heavy favourite no matter your palate.

5. Dirty Red Cafe, Glebe

A cafe loved by locals, Dirty Red is what all good Aussie cafes are about. There’s a large airy courtyard out the back, plenty of space for groups (they even take bookings), and are very dog-friendly – so you know it’s going to be a good time. Our tip: try the Iced Earl Grey Matcha!

6. AP House, Surry Hills

We’ve talked about AP before, and there’s good reason we’re bringing them up again. These guys know how to make a mean matcha (and an even meaner pastry). At AP House, their matcha menu isn’t extensive (you can choose between the Organic Matcha, or the Matcha Coconut Cloud) in a true sign of quality over quantity. Afterwards, head around the corner to AP Supply for a freshly stuffed cream puff.

7. The Depot, North Bondi

The Depot is one of those cafes that you just want to be around, good vibes. Beachside, with a bangin’ menu to match. For our matcha lovers, you’ve got a few options including the Iced Cherry Matcha and the Iced Coconut Matcha. They also serve a mean Iced Spicy Cacao if you’re feeling like straying from the usual.

8. Tento, Surry Hills

The crew at Tento know their stuff. They have a passion and talent for creating Japanese cuisine like no other, which is why we highly recommend ordering a hearty bowl of ramen, or a fresh sando while you’re here. But of course, you came for the matcha! And we can confirm, you won’t be disappointed here. Coconut Matcha, Kyoto Matcha Berry, and even a Matcha Tini Cocktail are all on the menu here.

9. Tokyo Lamington, Newtown

Tokyo Lamington brings the humble Lamington to the world. We could stop there, and say it is worth the visit for those lamingtons alone. But, delve into their drinks menu and you’ll be just as satisfied. Whether you go for an Iced Matcha-gato, Matcha Yuzu Tonic, or a Matcha Lavender Latte, you’ll walk away a very happy customer.
